I changed my mind on this one. At first, I didn't like how the new colors changed the more saturated, stylized aesthetic to more realistic tones. I thought the game wasn't going for that. But the more I go back and forth between the two styles, I see there are benefits to both. You certainly don't have to choose just one. Worth checking out, if nothing else!
| Not better nor worse | DixonCider | 2021-07-28 | Version 1.0 |
Castlevania Bloodlines had a distinct style. It mixed a litany of blues with red and green for contrast. It could over rely on blue too often, so some tweaks here and there would definitely help the aesthetic pop more. Does this patch do that? No. Instead of improving the original art style, Pyron's patch pushes the colours in a more realistic direction. Many more yellows are introduced. Sometimes it looks better. Sometimes it looks washed out. Sometimes the changes are utterly pointless, like a floor tile going from dark grey to a slightly lighter grey. Credit where credit is due, Johnny & Eric's gameplay sprites now have the same colours as their cutscene sprites. It was a weird discrepancy in the original game. If you like it you like it. If you don't you don't. It's not an objective improvement though.

I'm a big CV fan, but did not have Bloodlines memorized to the point of knowing the color palette that well. It was only going back to the original and looking at more comparison screenshots could I really appreciate the author's work. On Morris, you can actually see his suspenders now because they're a different color than his body! Stuff like that brings out the detail in what's already a nice-looking game.
| Massive Improvement! | biggtastee | 2019-05-28 | Version 1.0 |
The color choices used make the game "pop" and give it a whole new aesthetic. The Tower of Pisa boss looks exceptionally amazing. Excellent work!
| Much Better! | Vanya | 2014-08-12 | - |
This is a very nice enhancement to the original that I feel corrects some rather poor palette choices made by the original team. Much of the architecture and many of the enemies have more realistic palettes that help to put you a little bit more into the game while still maintaining the overall feel of the original. There are still a few minor issues here and there that should be fixed, but it's still a great improvement.
