Finally something that the original game was lacking the most, the ability to actually use the otherwise obsolete L and R buttons and change the main item without constantly pressing Start and going into the Menu. This is a must have addition/ASM for any longer hack for this game, since you can switch faster and thus can use a variety of items in a shorter time frame. This feature is almost a necessity if faced with the riddles, which include lighting torches while timed, specially if the room has pits. You thus need to switch between lamp/fire rod and the hookshot a lot. Now you can do that without the annoying pressing of the Menu button.

Great hack. It's great that this is possible because the L and R buttons don't even do anything outside the map. I just wish it was for the 1.0 jp rom, because that recently got a chest randomization hack which I really want to play with this new L and R buttons hack. [rant] The way I imagined it was by using the L and R buttons as 2 alternatives to the Y button, a bit like in OOT. Maybe even remove the map function of the X button and set it to the select or start menu so we have 4 item buttons. This would be an expansive hack but it would completely overhaul the combat options of the original game.

After some derps on my end (mixed up headered mods and unheadered patches), this works perfectly with Zelda Starring Zelda 2! I can't wait to try this in some speedruns! With frame advance you can switch weapons and use the new weapon on the same frame O___O; Please make a headered patch too, though.

Requested Euclid to make something like this years ago, but he was unsure how to implement it. This is a really outstanding hack! I'm actually recommending it for all the past and future Zelda 3 hacks, so long as we update our control schemes a bit to make it compatible with other hacks around (such as skipping monologues with the "L" button and using superbombs with the "R" button). Here's my Current Control Scheme:
