| good hack, but it could be excellent | metatron724 | 2020-01-28 | Version 2.0 |
it's a good hack, very fun, i just wish zero could have his hair and sword, would be a excellent hack.
| Not Much More Than A Pointless Pallet Swap | Eldrethor | 2018-02-26 | Version 2.0 |
Zero has always been a fun character in the X series, and for good reason. He has a tough persona, sleek red armor, long hair, and eventually his signature saber, which was an awesome departure from the traditional run-and-gun of the Megaman series as a whole. Granted, his potential in X1 is a far cry from what he eventually becomes, but the idea of playing as him was a fun idea. Unfortunately, Falchion22's execution here isn't as clean as one could hope for. While the standing shot of Zero in the opening prologue looks decent (sans hair), there are a number of graphical issues that take away from the experience. Zero's sprites have some decent detailing, and the author made sure to include his white charged shot, but his head is disproportionately large, his hair is missing entirely, and the tail burst that appears when he dashes is bland and static, which isn't how it appears in his scenes in the original game. Aside from Zero, there are a number of other graphical problems as well. X's sprites and animations are also static and broken, and this is apparent when he frees Zero from Vile's grasp in the opening stage. I also noticed the sloppy misuse of "should of", the lack of punctuation, and the completely static portraits when characters are speaking. While replacing Dr. Light with Wily's sprites was a neat idea, Wily's dialogue offers little to the player, and is somewhat incoherent, as he segues from "He is my rival Destroy him!!" to "Step into this capsule to receive an acceleration boost." Like the other characters that have portraits, his is also static and has no speaking animation. Aside from the graphical and grammatical issues, this hack does little to make the experience unique to Zero. From beginning to end, everything plays exactly the same as the original game, with no change whatsoever. Weapons and upgrades work the same as they did for X, and boss AI, level designs, and whatnot are all completely unchanged. Nothing about this hack makes me feel like I'm playing with a different character, and even some variation in the stock Z-Buster would have been appreciated (faster charge times, fewer bullets on screen, etc). Between the graphical issues, the sloppy dialogue, and the lack of any real innovation, this is an unpolished 2/10 hack that adds nothing new or exciting to the original game, and does little to make you feel like you're playing with Zero and not X.
| Excellent Start | megamanxguru | 2017-07-14 | Version 2.0 |
Excellent start to the zero mod for MegamanX1. It still needs some work as the others have mentioned but it is headed towards the right direction. My favorite was the wily capsules and his dialog, exactly how his character is, very terse and out of touch. Hope to see an update soon, good luck!
| Fun, but... | thecowwarrior | 2017-05-13 | Version 2.0 |
Just finished my playthrough of this hack. I have a few thoughts. 1) The first thing players will notice is that Zero doesn't look quite right. He is too short and his head is too big for his body. This is because the X sprite was modified to look like Zero. Thus, Zero's animations are identical to the original X, except for a boost effect when he dashes. He also is missing his trademark long blonde hair. This makes him look very strange. 2) The Dr. Light capsules have been replaced by Dr. Wily Capsules, with the Wily sprite ripped from MM7 and a nice original design for the capsules themselves. It's a cool idea, and I was looking forward to seeing what Wily would have to say as I collected the armor parts. However, he just says the same lines he does in the MMX4 cutscenes. I feel like a few rather obvious opportunities were missed here. First, why wasn't any original dialogue written for Wily? He is such a great character, it almost writes itself! Second, I was so disappointed that Wily wasn't wearing a Street Fighter outfit when I got the hadouken. Lastly, why don't the capsule upgrades give Zero his armor he wore from MMX2 onward? Would have been so cool to see. However, I do very much like how Zero looks on the victory screen after defeating a boss. 3) The biggest problem with this hack - I never felt like I was playing as Zero. Sure, the sprite kind of looks like him, but the gameplay is completely unchanged. Outside of a few sprite swaps and slightly modified dialogue, this is the exact same MMX that was released 24 years ago. I would have liked to have see some actual changes to game mechanics implemented to make Zero feel/play differently than X. So, the big question - is it fun? Well, yes. It is, after all, Mega Man X, one of the greatest games ever made. Just go into this with tempered expectations. The Zero Project, this is not. The author had a neat idea, and this hack is a decent start. It needs some more work before it can be called great, however.

This is interesting much like the Megaman x3 patch to play as Zero. Now if only we can have one for Megaman x2.
| A Lot of Potential | Mother Kojiro | 2016-06-14 | Version 2.0 |
I played this up to the Sigma stages, and while I did see the base for a good hack, I feel that this one still needs a little work. The dash animation has just a static burst of energy, which looks odd without moving or flickering. The buster shots look great in their new palettes, but the charge palettes don't change for the special weapons. The upgrades also don't appear on Zero, as they do on X; he looks exactly the same at the end as he does in the beginning. There are also a number of typos, such as "could of". This can become a great hack, but at the moment, it needs a little work.
| Great! | Leqesai | 2016-06-12 | Version 2.0 |
I downloaded and played through the romhack as soon as I saw it posted. Its absolutely fantastic! There are some graphical oddities (some missing pixels/sprites here and there) but its barely noticeable. My one problem with the mod is the dialogue in parenthesis indicating Zero's thoughts. I think this detracts from the overall quality of the hack and makes it feel like the thoughts/feelings of the character are being forced onto the player (a big no-no in good storytelling). That one issue aside I think its a great hack. A must-play, to be totally honest. Right along side the zero hack for mega man x3. It would be REALLY amazing to see some updates to this that fix the missing sprites, add Zero's hair back (dunno why this is different... but whatever) and make the armor upgrades display on Zero, somehow.
