Hack description

While Mario is romping through the Mushroom Kingdom's royal water fountains one day, he is witness to a mysterious phenomenon: the fish from around the kingdom begin to take flight! It's up to the Mario Brothers to find out what is responsible (I wonder...) and stop it before the local fish markets are all dried up! Note that this is a "mini-hack" -- a novelty/concept hack that is complete and spawns only one world.

Short but very sweetyoyotheyoshi2014-09-25-

This is a single-world hack that proves challenging and fun enough to keep players going until the end of the hack, with a very interesting end boss battle. Every stage is auto-scrolling which adds to the challenge and just about every stage is filled to the brim with Cheep-Cheeps! Every kind. Even the legendary golden Cheep-Cheep that was one of the unused enemies in the original version of Super Mario Bros. 3, and even a Porcu-Puffer never seen before in SMB3, except in other hacks.

The stage layouts are very well done, I didn't come across any bugs or issues, the challenge was just right and the game took about half an hour for me to finish, give or take. For someone less acquainted with Super Mario Bros. 3 than I may find it'll take longer to finish, but I'd estimate no more than 2 hours to the casual gamer.

Excellent work on this. :)

Short, quick fun!sVybDy2010-05-28-

If you're like me, one of the things that annoy you the most about hacks is how much time you usually have to devote to completing the entire game. Because even as a gamer who spends countless hours on games, I have to recognize that amateur-made hacks may lack the dedication to quality level design and difficulty that makes professional games work. Fortunately, Mystery of the Flying Fish is one of the few hacks I've found that was genuinely entertaining start to finish.

For one thing, as a concept hack that only lasts for one world, I was able to knock it out in under an hour. Whether or not you'll be able to do the same depends upon your reflexes. This hack features several levels or sections of levels which have flying Cheep Cheeps waiting to take you down. They can certainly be thwarted, but you have to be quick to dodge or defeat them. You also will not get many spare items or extra lives to do it with.

Despite the apparent shallowness of the idea, I was actually impressed by the number of different ways the creator of this hack exploited it to keep things interesting until the very end (and that especially goes for the final battle, which is easily the most inventive take on this classic bit of gameplay I've ever seen in a hack. I'm proud to say I managed to take the final boss down without getting hit, much less losing a life.) There is also some clever graphic and text hacking that ties into the story, and the fact that the story is well-written to boot is both unusual and refreshing.

In short, unless flying Cheep Cheeps aggravate you to no end, this is definitely a hack you should try playing. Highly enjoyable in all aspects.

Heavy trial&error gameplayNess2010-01-29-

I think the concept of the hack and the storyline are great.

But I didn't like it because it was heavily based on trial&error gameplay. Fishes just jump at you out of nowhere and in most cases you can't predict it and therefore can't avoid anything. Therfore, you just die over and over again, learning precise steps to execute if you want to make it out alive.

Some people might like this kind of gameplay - but I find it irritating.
