You know, I've got to be honest. My knowledge of the Sega Master System is very limited. I actually had no idea, in the slightest, that it had a secondary FM chip, in addition to its standard sound chip. So, as soon as I read about this ROM hack, I decided to look into it. All I can say is that... I get MSX2 flashbacks - specifically to a little homebrew game called "Sonyc" - when I see this hack in action. That is a very good thing. Sonyc used some of the MSX2's secondary hardware to produce render an absolutely amazing soundtrack and, just like that, this ROM hack uses the YM2413 chip to render the music in a brand new, absolutely magnificent way. But, it doesn't just do that. Valleybell has taken great care to make sure all the music sounds accurate and sounds excellent when played alongside the PSG sound effects of the game. Every single song that I've heard is rendered to perfection, making the original Sonic the Hedgehog game all the more wonderful and fun to play! Best of all, if you don't want the new FM soundtrack, you can turn it off right from the title screen. It's win-win for everyone! I highly recommend this ROM hack for those looking for an improved soundtrack and improved gameplay experience. It's more than just a novelty. And, if I might say, I'd love to see versions of this for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic: Triple Trouble, and especially Ninja Gaiden. (I know; random pick. It's a great game with a marvelous soundtrack, though.) | |||
