Hack description

This is an unofficial addendum version of Pokémon Throwback, which is a hack created to serve as the definitive version of the original Kanto journey. Based off of Pokémon FireRed, Throwback includes a bevy of features and fixes to make it worth using over the base games.

Pokémon Throwback was originally developed by RichterSnipes and you can find his official version here. There are 2 versions of this unofficial Pokémon Throwback by tkim. One only includes bugfixes and otherwise is very similar to the last release by RichterSnipes. The other also includes a number of improvements and changes. Both are included in the download.

Base Features from official RichterSnipes version:

Optional Improvements/Changes in tkim's unofficial version:

GB Sounds:

Catch 'em All:

Extras:

Both versions of tkim's patch are included in the .ZIP file, one with only bugfixes to RichterSnipes's original patch, and the other that also has all the optional improvements and changes tkim added. A discussion thread for the development of this hack is on the website PokéCommunity here. Apply to an unaltered Pokémon FireRed version 1.0 USA Game Boy Advance ROM (the "Squirrels" ROM has the correct checksums).

Definitive Kanto Experiencedavidvkimball2022-06-22Version 180715

I greatly enjoyed my time with this romhack. I'm currently about 20 hours in and have about 148/251 Pokédex. I found the Bill's machine method of trading/evolving Pokémon extremely intuitive and have enjoyed the equality of life changes. Playing through the post-game event-only sections has been an absolute joy, as it's something I always wondered about as a kid.

The only mistake I've found so far is that when Celebi joins your party, its name is in all capital letters, likely an oversight from the game's original naming logic.

Would recommend to anyone who wants a complete, standalone Pokémon Kanto experience. I will likely obtain all 251 Pokémon.

The definitive experience for Gen 1MattKimura2019-07-06Version 180715

Absolutely recommended improvement hack! One of the best improvement hacks I've ever encountered. The definitive way to play through Gen 1 if you ask me. There's so many quality of life changes that make the game more enjoyable to play in this day and age. I recommend this over Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee. If you're gonna play Gen 1, it's gotta be this hack.

RichterSnipes did amazing work, and with this addendum patch it only gets better. I finished a full playthrough and I can't complain about a single thing. It's challenging that's for sure, especilly the elite 4! This hack doesn't go too far with it's changes, you're still getting the base game as you'd expect. Except it feels much more modern with features like infinite TM usage, run anywhere, etc. But hands down my favorite part of the whole entire experience is the gameboy music. That makes a huge difference over the original FireRed music which I never enjoyed. It makes the game feel super nostalgic and more intense, the music that I'm more familiar with. I don't think gen 3 should have anything to do with this game's music, which is why I stick to RichterSnipe's changes. The game feels so natural, like I'm not using a hack. As if Nintendo themselves updated the game. It's hard to ever go back to the original after playing this hack. It feels right at home. I can appreciate that the author of the addendum separates some changes instead of enforcing them. The type of changes that are subjective that only some would agree on. With that said I stick with the official patch. But thanks for continuing RichterSnipe's work, it's great to see an already great hack become even better with new ideas and fixes.

Get this hack right now, and forget the original FireRed. Spread the word to any Pokemon fans out there. It's that good, a huge difference over te original FireRed. My only gripe (not with this hack) with FireRed in general is the sheer amount of trainers to battle, it feels endless! And still end up being underleveled for the Elite 4. But that's just how Pokemon in general is like. The hack does this game justic and it was a joy to play through with it.
