Hack description

Story

The main protagonist of the game is Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town! Just after conquering the Indigo League he got back to his mom in his hometown where Professor Oak has a new objective for him. He wants Ash to go to Valencia Island to pick up a strange kind of Pokéball, since Professor Ivy is unable to send it through the PC system. Of course Ash is eager to take this easy objective!
Nearly all episodes of the Orange Islands are covered, but not all events are necessarily very prominent. Some episodes are implemented as an important part of the storyline, while some are just mini-quests.

Reviews

A well-executed premise that can be a bit tiring.Incantator2023-01-09Version 5.7

This is a review as someone who haven't watched the corresponding anime episodes.

The biggest charming point of this hack is that it is so polished. Not just the graphics but all the small events, conversations with NPCs, the general geography and location of buildings... all of them are laid out beautifully and naturally. One would believe if they are told that this is actually an official spin-off game.

The premise of the hack forgives many glaring problems. For one thing, this hack is disgustingly linear, but for most of the time you would still enjoy your journey due to the aforementioned completeness of the hack.

However, it tries too hard to relive the Anime and ends up lacking as a game. It is very sluggish to progress since you have to go through all the small events, many of which have no significant bearing on your team. If you factor in the forced linear progression on top of that, it is very easy to get exhausted while playing.

Another related problem is about the gym leaders. The first two give a good amount of challenge, but the third one has only 3 Pokemons and the fourth one only 2. The only rationale I can think of is, that is how they were shown in the anime, and the result is utterly disappointing, lackluster gym battles. The final champion is not any better; one of his Pokemons cannot hit Normal type at all due to its crippled moveset, and another one spams Solar Beam all day only to get wasted by moves like Dig. Most likely, those moves are what were shown in the anime, but straight copying off the moves dumped down the challenge factor and maimed the hack itself.

I would much prefer the hack was more polished as a game not as a copy of the anime series, but it is still worth giving it a shot if only to see how beautifully the whole premise is executed. Even conversations with trainers on the sea were enjoyable. While it can become tiresome at some point, all the events - even the small ones - are laid out with extra care and full of details. Even the difficulty curve was great before the third gym (partly because I was raising many Pokemons in my team); the rival battle and even Team Rocket gave fair amount of challenge.

Overall, give it a shot; there is no reason not to try it.
