Hack description

This prototype is an is an interpretation of various development phases of the game based on the Alttp prototype assets. This is not an authentic prototype nor does it represent a single or specific point of development.

This is a result of 4 months (maybe 5) of "behind the scenes" hard work, a few assembly hacks and fixes etc. This game was known as A Link To The Past and only has been renamed into A Link To The Proto for the release to stand on it's own.

There is a lot of changes, prototype assets that made it into the game, but unfortunately due to the multiple iterations of the same tilesets and a rather limited space for graphics, only a few select ones made it into the reconstruction.

But still, there is a lot of places to explore and many unseen things to discover from the proto content that was cut from the final vanilla game by Nintendo.

Reviews

Very cool, kinda toughCookieskoon2021-03-24Version 1.0

Let me begin by saying, yes, I recommend any fan of LTTP try this hack.

However I find it feels a bit needlessly difficult. I honestly can't even get beyond the first dungeon boss, and as a long time veteran of LTTP that is NOT easy for me to admit.

Could just be me though, they say your senses dull with age. I am in casting distance of 40 as of this review after all.

Good job though. Couldn't have been easy to piece it together like this.

Fun hack with great coloursSAIYAN482021-01-22Version 1.0

This a great hack incorporating many of the prototype features into a playable game. The palette makes for some really cool areas and it's always interesting to see what a classic game was like during development. I definitely recommend this hack and hope that other people will enjoy it as much as I do.

Was waiting for thisJeffriesTube2021-01-03Version 1.0

I've been checking TCRF's info on ALTTP's leaked findings, and just hoping someone out there was going to make something like this hack. While the dungeons mostly are the same, and the overall story hasn't changed, the new (old?) overworld map, and everything else on display here is worth a look. For now, this is as close as you're going to get to playing ALTTP in it's earlier stages of development, sort of. As the author says in the description, this isn't meant to be a definitive snapshot of what the game was like at any certain point before it was released. What they've put together is really interesting though, and uses quite a bit of what's covered on TCRF. I've played up through Dark World level 4, and would assume the entire game is playable. Will be going back to finish the last few dungeons for sure. Well worth a look for fans of the game, really have been enjoying this.
