It's great, but a improvement hack shouldn't break entire areas or boss rooms.jonespianist2023-08-21Version 11c

I wanted to give this hack an absolute "yes!". I really did. But it started to fall apart as early as Solomon Shrine.

The Mage boss' fireballs aren't supposed to show up until he throws them around, but this hack makes them do just that. I never minded this change that much. In fact, I think it gave the boss' entrance a bit more flourish.

The Centipede boss, however, had its weakspot collision placed on... the entirety of the room. I kid you not. (It was supposed to be on the boss' tail.)

Then I got to Rasteenie Mine.

Besides the iris-in no longer being a perfect shape, all the enemies have inexplicably become invisible. This was the only technical problem that affected something other than a boss room.

When I got to the Vampire boss, the room's collision was inexplicably disjointed so far downwards that Adol could literally run around on top of the HUD. The boss itself had no problems though.

At the Darm Tower, it became clear that ALL boss rooms past the first one have disjointed collision. This issue made the Mantis boss-already the second worst boss in the game-outright impossible to beat. At that point, I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep my "yes" rating anymore.

Lastly, right after Dark Fact had finished his dialogue, Adol started to inexplicably take damage until he died, during which he couldn't move. The same thing happened with the actual final boss. This happens regardless of whether or not Adol has the Blue Necklace equipped, and in turn, it doesn't happen at all in the unpatched game.

I was using the "English Datchy plus" variant for my playthrough, so I checked some other variants, including the most basic variant. They all had the exact same issues, and it wasn't any better or worse on the latest versions of Mesen, Nestopia, or FCEUmm.

I still ultimately say "yes" to this hack, since it otherwise works as intended, but these problems almost turned me off from finishing my playthrough; and now that minucce isn't supporting this hack anymore, there's no chance of it getting any further updates.

Until someone makes a fixed version of this hack, you'll have to switch to the unpatched game when you fight any of the bosses, as well as when you get to the Rasteenie mine.

Definitely Use Thislastdual2021-10-11Version 7.1

Minucce's hack brings some welcome fixes that tidy up the experience, and with the deadzone modification this really becomes a must-use patch.

I always found it a little absurd that in a game which uses bump combat, the screen wouldn't scroll until Adol gets precariously close to the edge. Fixing that issue alone vastly improves things. So if you're inclined to play Ys I on NES (remakes aside, it remains one of the best action-RPGs on the platform), this patch comes highly recommended.
