| Three great hacks in one package | Nokia3310 | 2022-02-11 | Version 1.0 |
So, this is a 'choose your flavour' kind of package with three great options. I like them all. The Original title screen patch is a great update to have. Much as I appreciate certain graphical flaws in classic games for being a product of their time, the representation of the Ms. Pac-Man logo in the Namco NES version is wretched looking. Considering it was a later NES release (1993) and Tengen had done a perfectly adequate job of the logo on their version three years earlier on NES, it should have looked quality. Strangely, Namco used the same horrid logo in their SNES port the following year (unlockable game in Pac-Man 2) but with more colours... and yet they did a perfectly fine job of it on their Game Boy version. It's my least favourite part of both NES and SNES Namco versions and this patch makes it look terrific. Great job! The Cleaner Map Graphics patch may be less welcome to gamers with an attachment to the original Namco version but I like it. It gets a thumbs up from me as a graphical design improvement. Sometimes less is more and I prefer the simpler look of the mazes with this patch on NES. It's really a matter of preference though. Lastly, the Turbo patch is more of like an extra mode, giving the player turbo speed throughout the game. I didn't expect to like this but it changes the difficulty dynamics in a way that doesn't feel wrong. You need quicker reactions to move Ms. Pac-Man in directions but she darts away from the ghosts more quickly. I prefer the normal speeds but turbo makes it fun in a different way. Great work. These are all well considered changes, all implemented in ways that function as they should and add value to an already great game. On a side note, Ms. Pac-Man (Namco) on NES is compatible with Project Nested v1.3 (although not later versions), which means this can be converted into a SNES rom too. All three of these patches can be used without affecting compatibility (tested on a Super Famicom). | |||
