| Solid hack for it's time. | lexluthermiester | 2019-11-08 | Version 1.0 |
Context is important and while SMB1 hacks are as common as a cold these days, back in the time of this hack's creation it was a solid and even impressive work given the lack of utilities and tools available at the time. Much of the hacking done back then was done by hand and as such it was hard work. Judged on its own merits, this hack is interesting and provides a fun experience, different from the original game. Whether you want to try something new for SMB1 or you want to take a peek at the hacking community's past, this hack will not disappoint. Try it out, have fun!

At first I was thinking that this would be a great hack, with many changes but alas none of the game play was changed, in fact the only thing that was changed was that practically everything had a hat. This was still good for a few laughs and if you're trying to get all the Mario hacks then why not, but if this was otherwise going to be your first Mario hack that determined whether you would keep downloading them, I would go with Mario's moon adventure.
| Good for a chuckle but not much else. | Dastari | 2009-03-29 | - |
Firstly I would like to point out that I love Super Mario Bros. It is a fantastic game that has provided me with years of amusement. Super Mario Bros: Quest for the Missing Hat is basically the same great game with the same great music. Only the graphics have been changed to make the situation a little sillier. The premise of the game is that Mario's hat has been stolen and he goes around searching for it. Many of his enemies wear hats as do some of the background objects and the pipes have been redrawn so that they look like hats. This is apparently a way to "rub it in" that he is lacking his own hat. The mushrooms have been redrawn to look like socks (not explained). When Mario becomes super or fire Mario he also loses his overalls so you can have him wandering around in his underwear. Some of the backgrounds and tiles have been changed to look different as well. After that the game is identical to the original SMB. So while that in itself makes it a pretty awesome game, I don't think that the changes really add anything worth noting to the game. If you're like me you will chuckle the first time that you see it and you will chuckle again when you get to the end, which I won't spoil but it is different from the traditional SMB ending. If anything I think that some of the graphics changes to the background and tiles just make everything look somewhat cluttered but that may be because I'm so used to the traditional SMB look. So all-in-all I would say that if you're curious to see this hack after I've described it then you should probably go ahead and look but I have a feeling that after you chuckle you'll go back to playing the original or another hack with more significant changes. I reviewed patch version 1.0 of this game.
