Hack description

Thanks to the source code being released, Cacodemontube has managed to convert the rom of SNES Doom to run on a Super FX 1 Chip. The same one used by Star Fox on the SNES.

This change lets you play the game as if it was shown to Id Software during the prototype phase. As SNES Doom was developed on a hacked up Star Fox cartridge.

(Caution: This has been modified to run on the older Super FX 1 instead of the FX 2 Chip SNES Doom normally uses.
The framerate will be significantly worse as a result.)

That's Kind Of The Point, Bro...DoNotGetThis2023-11-27Version 1.0

The description itself says that this is using the Super FX '1' chip (aka the 'Mario Chip') - The one used in Star Fox. SNES Doom used the Super FX '2' ('GSU-2' revision).

To quote Wikipedia: "The first version of the chip, commonly referred to as simply "Super FX", is clocked with a 21.4 MHz signal, but an internal clock speed divider halves it to 10.7 MHz. Later on, the design was revised to become the Super FX GSU (Graphics Support Unit); this, unlike the first Super FX chip revision, is able to reach 21 MHz."

The patch makes the game run at half the framerate BECAUSE the Super FX 1 was running at half the speed! The description itself explains that this patch was made to simulate what a 'prototype' version of Doom using the earlier 'Mario Chip' would have looked and played like.

And by that point, it does EXACTLY the job it was intended to do. It promised mothing more than that.

I was expecting this to look better than the base game, or have better performance. Hopefully both. Instead it was neither, and it actually haves a worse performance than the original, with a severe slowdown and huge lagging everywhere.
