It does what it says!Lumine2023-08-11Version 1.0

While the hack itself changes the sprite of X to Zero or the fake black Zero, it doesn't change any of the in-game texts such as Light's armor capsules... Although you collect X parts instead of Zero's!

The same upgrade capsules offer no graphical changes to Zero's sprite - then again, you can't improve perfection.

Zero's gameplay feels a little slower than X because of his double shot and then a split second before the saber beam "wave", but I think it's intentional. He feels a bit heavier than X due to that.

Edit: There are some differences, since I just finished the game.

This hack also is a "pseudo-hard mode"

As far as I could look for, there was no armor capsule, which leaves (black) Zero way more fragile than X, since late game enemies will be dealing double the damage against him, as well as the lack of an Giga Attack.

Zero's buster buster slash combo deals pitiful damage compared to the ungodly powerful X2's buster.

The lack of Armor Capsule also bars you from obtaining the shoryuken.

I've also found a few small graphical bugs:

  • the 3rd level of charge not changing color from yellow to pink for the saber slash BUT it charges to pink when you use a maverick weapon
  • Zero's ride armor sprites briefly reverts to X's the ride armor attacks (this bug can be even seen in the embedded video, around 7:35-40)
  • Zero's sprite is bigger and some charged weapons effects overlap with his sprites, such as charged Speed Burner's dash and Bubble Splash's shields

Other than that, it does what it says! It could be much better, but I think it's a good start.

tl;dr It does what it says, but Zero's gameplay is slightly different and more limited. It doesn't change any in-game text.

Mega Man X2 - Playable Zero is a Hack by Programer Peru with sprite work help from Cerberus Rack and Maverick Blue

This hack looks like it was given some love. Zero has his iconic 3 part fully charged shot we see from the good ending of X2. Something sorely lacking from vanilla X3. His stance and the way he dashes were kept as well. It's the small things. With an Option for Zero's Black armor you can't lose in terms of the aesthetic and model changes this hack offers.

The downsides were Zero's physics. And I know this may not be the hackers fault, but merely how X2 and X3 use the same engine. Zero naturally feels a bit weightier and less agile than X but makes up for it in power. The issues here are that if you're trying to play the way you do as X it will be more difficult. There are different frame delays on mid-air turning and unleashing fully charged shots. Especially with an issue with charging while wall jumping. The First 2 Fully Charged shots are normal level 2s and the Saber replaces the Pink Level 3 that hits through boss invulnerability frames (with less damage (maybe a balance decision)) so it takes some getting used to if you're used to how X can just start blasting like Danny Devito.

I pretended the downsides were adding to some sort of faux hard mode, which, all in all, were minor annoyances. In my opinion, if you loved the MMX3 Zero Project, you'll love this even more.
