Zelda 3 dungeon editor and overworldReviews
| Already a lot better than Hyrule Magic | Hiro-sofT | 2023-05-03 | Version 3.0.2 |
I can only repeat what already has been said. Generally it's easy to build dungeons, make changes in the layout and its cool how much you can already do with it. I also love the graphics editor as I never got zcompress to work back then for some strange reasons. Even making your own titlescreen or dungeon maps is possible with this tool (even as far as editing the sword graphic on the title logo, which is normally a sprite object), which is impressive. However, I also wanted to report a thing I noticed, apparently it seems to be an issue with the editor but maybe someone else can back me up on this: If you save a rom with this editor, it will mess up the music in the dark world areas in the game and set them mostly to "beginning" and "rain fall". This happened to my alttp projects i worked on in this editor and even just putting in a vanilla rom, changing one thing, saving and look back at it. Trying to manually fix this inside the editor just sets it back, as if it never saved it before. The most obvious area to test this is the pyramid area you get to after the first agahnim fight. Usually leaving the area to the right causes the wrong song to play (as the song playing there at first is hardcoded into the spawning code). I was looking around if there is something like a discord server or anything where you could report or mention issues like this but my search in the internet for something like that did not lead me to anything of that sort, so I thought this might be the next best place for it, seeing how the editor is also being updated over here. I look forward to all the new versions and updates to this, as making an alttp romhack was always something I would love to do, and this editor already shows a lot of promise. 3.0.6 Update: I just heard about the new updates and can confirm that the bug I mentioned was fixed. Thanks a lot Zarby! Definitely look forward to this editor in the future and keep recommending it to new people wanting to enter ALTTP romhacking.
| The Best Editor I Have Ever Worked With | Letterbomb | 2022-06-09 | Version 3.0.2 |
I want to start off this review by saying that I first worked with Hyrule Magic before trying this editor out, and if you know anything about Hyrule Magic you'll know for a fact that editing with it is slow, buggy and irritating at some points. There's a lot of bugs within Hyrule Magic that holds it back, and when Zarby introduced this editor to me when it was at v2.7.5, I knew instantly that this editor was going to be far more superior than Hyrule Magic. Fast forward to v3.0.2 and I think that this program has absolutely past Hyrule Magic in terms of editing and quality. Not only is this editor way easier to learn than Hyrule Magic due to how everything is presented, it's also way easier to make hacks with due to the fact that this editor improves many things that Hyrule Magic made really hard to edit. First and foremost, the overworld editing. ZScream introduces 16x16 tile editing, and compared to Hyrule Magic's 32x32 tile editing this is an extremely major improvement in comparison it's not even funny. 16x16 tile editing is so great because you can now build overworld areas really fast, and the fact this wasn't a thing in Hyrule Magic makes me confused on why it wasn't there already. Secondly, dungeon editing is also made way easier to figure out. Not only can you now see the background 3 overlays used in the dungeons, but you also don't have to right click every time you want to place an object or a sprite. Instead you can find objects/sprites in a menu that displays these always, which makes editing way faster once again. Third off, things like graphic editing and tile editing is way easier to follow. Instead of having to use ZCompress for graphics, for most things you can use ZScream to edit graphics with no problems whatso ever. It's also easy to use these graphics in order to replace tiles on the overworld, which is great because you can do a lot more custom things way faster than Hyrule Magic. Finally, the greatest thing about the editor is the fact that it has waaayyy less bugs than Hyrule Magic. I've had almost no experiences with rooms corrupting or overworld areas corrupting for no reason at all. While this may seem like such a basic improvement over Hyrule Magic, it's actually one of the greatest because Hyrule Magic is infamous for corrupting so many Zelda 3 hacks over the years. So to finally have something that will almost never corrupt anything as frequent is so good to the point where this editor in my opinion completely replaces the 20+ year old Hyrule Magic. The only real problem or nitpick with this program is the fact that there is no music editor. But even then that's such a minor thing because there hasn't been a lot done with Hyrule Magic's music editor anyway, and most of this games music is good enough to the point where there's kind of no point in replacing the vanilla game's music. So all in all, this editor is way better than Hyrule Magic in every possible way. Everything has been simplified and debugged to the point where it's easy for a complete beginner to start hacking this game. I definitely recommend this editor to anyone who wants to start Zelda 3 hacking, as this is probably the best editor I have ever worked with.
| Just...wow | gravitygoesup1 | 2020-12-22 | Version 2.5 |
This editor has so many features you can literally make a full hack of Link to the Past just using this editor. And it seriously isn't that hard to use. It has editors for dungeons, overworld, text, and a screen for importing custom graphics. Pretty useful program for anyone doesn't know ASM and wants to make a rom hack.
