This is easily in the upper 90th percentile for all SRAM game editors for any game. It's a fully WYSIWYG editor and is reasonably intuitive unlike many other editors that trade usability to make it easier and faster for the developer. Everything and anything that is stored in SRAM can be edited including global flags that aren't tied to a specific save slot. Even more impressive is the ability to create fresh SRAM files completely from scratch without needing to run the game first. I also really like how individual save slots can be exported and imported. There are few oddities and disappointments though that provide some space for improvement. Anytime a new tile or block of tiles is place there's a delay where presumably some kind of post-processing is done. This really impedes making serious changes since it significantly increases the overall time. There's probably a technical reason for this but if it's at all possible to optimize out in someway then it would be time well-spent by the developer. Additionally, the apparent lack of an intelligent tool for placing tiles from a set is a sore spot. For example, when adding road tiles or water tiles, among others, you must choose a particular tile for the direction of the road or the shape of the shoreline. This means to create complex curves you must choose all the individual tiles manually. A tool which would pick the logical tile based on the surrounding tiles automatically would making creating more complex layouts much easier. Finally, a new city can be created from scratch by either using completely blank terrain or importing various pre-built cities. What would be even cooler would be if it could generate random terrain given a seed. It's also a real shame that this isn't open source. I would encourage the developer consider posting it to GitHub or the like. | |||
