Use IPS on Super Mario Bros. (Japan, USA)Hack description
This hack updates the entire Super Mario Bros. game to match the look of more (relatively) modern Super Mario games, particularly Super Mario World. With the exception of solid background tiles, every tile has been updated including enemies and power-ups. However, nothing has been moved or had its behavior changed, and all of the graphic changes are simply updates (as opposed to replacements).Screenshots

| Nice graphics, but play IS changed slightly | JohnH | 2017-06-07 | Version 1.0 |
I like the graphic polish given to the game by this hack. But I feel I should correct the description given above. The gameplay IS changed by this hack in at least one important way, and I have verified this between the original game and this hack played in the same emulator. Specifically, Mario's bounce height off of enemies in the original game is slight, about one block high, while in the hack it's at least two blocks. This matters considerably when attempting, say, the "100 lives" trick bouncing off of the Koopa Troopa coming down the staircase in 3-1.

I would have to say that this is probably the best looking SMB graphical I have seen done in a hack of the original NES rom. Every enemy and backdrop is dripping with detail. A lot of heart was put into this project and it shows. The only aspect that I found lacking in this hack is that Mario still has his original palette, which clashes with the rest of the game.
