Never was a fanbenfromnesuniverse22022-06-12Version 1.0

Level design is not aesthetically pleasing nor does it follow a consistent logic, it doesn't feel nice to play. Ende's Super Mario Bros 3 Hack is fairly decent, but this one has poor level design.

Great for Players and ProsMother Kojiro2017-12-21Version 1.0

This hack has some really strange level design, but it's not just a bizarre experiment; there's a lot of thought put into it, as well. You'll run into all kinds of challenges, such as tricky platforming, thoughtful enemy placement, short timers, and even a few vine/pipe mazes. You'll have to stop to think about how to get out of more than a few situations, but there are also stretches where you can coast a little, and enjoy all of the strange things going on, too, so it doesn't really wear you down. I generally hate speed levels, too, but these don't have the timer so short that the slightest mistake will screw you over; so long as you know what to do, you'll be fine. The mazes were probably the neatest aspect; I don't know if I've ever seen anything like that in a Super Mario Bros. hack, where you have to choose the correct vine or pipe to enter to make your way through the stage.

Aesthetically, the graphics are the same, but palettes are mixed up now and again. You'll see underground areas with giant mushroom platforms, castles with unusual additions, and sky blue backgrounds in both, with or without clouds. After a while, if you're paying close enough attention, you start to learn how palettes are bound together in Super Mario Bros. You'll notice that when the pipes are red underwater, the coral takes on a hellish appearance, and you realize that they share the same palette, whatever that may be; the pink pipe in the original World 8-4 finally explained! You'll also jump into a giant tank of "water", only to realize that you aren't swimming; the water and lava at the bottom of land stages is just a decoration. Not only would I recommend this hack to someone looking for something weird, but also to anyone looking to make a Super Mario Bros. hack of their own; it teaches you the ins and outs of the engine, as well as showing you how you can make something so new and foreign without changing any of the default palettes or graphics.
