| Interesting, Fun... But very very flawed | OrangeLuigi | 2019-12-14 | Version 0.8 |
So i write this review on this rom hack in tell you about some of the things i found. If you let the game play in demo mode, After a few minutes you can play the game... It starts you off at 325 missiles and 5 super missiles, Morph ball, And you get Varia suit. And spazer but no bombs. And i think high jump boots too. It's funny to see where the game takes me further and further down the rabbit hole LOL I highly recommend this game to everyone. It's alot of fun I really had no idea where i was going or what i was doing. But it's a very fun game. Try it out for yourself and give it a try

The Hack Super Metroid digital cube is, in my opinion, a well built romhack and is a great way to blow away a couple hours. The only con that I can think of is in the infinite room after I figured it out there was a game breaking glitch that trapped me in the wall and made covered the screen in a glitching wall texture but it might be the fact I didn't have the patch for it if there is one. I highly recommend this romhack. I would love to communicate with the developer of this and possibly make a sequel with him.

Digital Cube is pretty much what the name says, a cube. With a grand total of 49 rooms, all only 1*1 in size, this hack is not large. However, how it presents its challenge is what makes it very unique and a worthy hack to try out for yourself. The hack was built off a movie premise, which from what I understand had people go through a maze, and if they choose the wrong door they died in some way. Digital Cube takes that idea and applies it to Metroid. Right from the start, you have a door that leads to death no matter what, and your other options lead to better results. While playing, you will undoubtedly come across these death rooms after picking up a few needed items, and thus have to redo everything to that point to get your items back. This is actually one of the features I love about this hack. Death is annoying, but this hack is so small, and I personally found the challenge of figuring out the right path to be very fun. It is a unique take in that instead of the player dying because enemies are really tough, or just plain evil room designs, death is more of a learning experience in this hack. You figure out where you can go, and you keep building on that as you go along. Another nice thing is that this hack still keeps the Metroid staple of backtracking in it, as you will be revisiting previous rooms to make more advancement through the maze. And not only that, the game manages to throw some unexpected obstacles in the way too. The biggest issue with the hack, and this isn't so much on Cloud, is that dying takes time. It isn't like Mario, where you fall into a pit, and 5 seconds later you are back in the stage. All the time spent on the death screen and getting back into the hack could really add up over time. A quicker death-back-to-gameplay sequence would be valuable for a hack where death is such a major part of the hack. The other thing is that this hack lends itself to savestate abuse. While there really is no need for it, just the fact that going to a new room with a new pickup you don't want to lose lends itself toward the player abusing this emulator feature. Not really the fault of the hacker, but it is something I could very easily see people doing. I always recommend against using savestates. but for this hack especially, death is a feature that helps the player learn. Pros
Cons
In the end, this hack is really fun, and it packs a lot of gameplay into a small hack. I definitely recommend it both in terms of what it offers, and to learn from how it deals with something like dying in the game, along with designing potential paths for the player to traverse. It is unique for a Metroid hack, and it won't take more than an hour to complete. (Unless you are bad at remember what doors are death traps at certain points.) Seriously give this hack a try.
