Hack description

A heavy weapon hack for the NTSC version of Mega Man II.

This hack includes the following changes to the weapons:

*Boss' bar fills faster

*Mega Man's energy fills faster (either by energy capsule and E-Tank)

*You start out with 1 free E-Tank in your inventory.

*Floor friction increased. Mega Man no longer slips and stops immediately after you release the D-Pad. Mimics the response from other Mega Man titles like 4 or 5.

*Items 1, 2 & 3 are infinite. This was done to avoid going back and forth some screens just to fill up the gauge to get over a certain portion of a stage.

*Weapon usage reduced. Every weapon shoot will only take 1 ammo consumption.

*Leaf Shield modified: You can now move with the Leaf Shield on and shoot it with Button B at any of the four main directions. (Bug fix from previous versions has been fixes as of v1.2)

*Time Stopper modified: The amount of time the weapons is used is reduced to 4 seconds per use, instead of depleting your ammo in only one button press. As of version 1.1, whenever you activate the Time Stopper, Mega Man is invincible to any enemy damage (He flickers)

* Crash Bomber modified: The detonation is now done remotely, by pressing the B button. This helps a lot in a particular stage in Wily's Fortress.

*Atomic Fire modified: The charge time has been reduced, it now charges twice as fast.

Fixes and breaks the game at the same timeTheSiege2018-02-27Version 1.3

For further reference, I have provided a video walkthrough where I beat the game in roughly half an hour using this hack. I'm very well researched when it comes to Mega Man 2, so I definitely know what I'm talking about when discussing this review.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEsS3IxZcaM

First the good fixes in the hack: The changes to Crash Bombs are very welcome and balances out the BooBeam Trap in Wily 4. For the most part, I love the overall changes to the weapons in general, with the exception of being invincible when using Time Stopper.

The Bad: If you thought Metal Blade was broken in the original game, you'll see that it doesn't even hold a candle to the new Time Stopper. Time Stopper would be good enough without being invincible, so removing invincibility would be the first fix.

That enough doesn't warrant the NO vote, the reason for that is the change to Bubble Lead. You now only possess just enough Bubble Lead to beat Dr. Wily. Because of this, you not only CAN NOT MISS EVEN ONE SHOT against one of the hardest opponents in the game, you're not able to use Bubble Lead against the Heat Man rematch without getting a GAME OVER first. This is completely unacceptable.

The Strange: Infinite ammo for the items? That's a bit excessive. Why not just quadruple the ammo or something?

TL:DR Remove invincibility from Time Stopper and give Bubble lead at least twice the ammo. Doing so will give this hack a very easy recommendation. Until then, stick to the original game.

A more balanced gamePeepus2017-12-10Version 1.3

This patch fixes nearly every gripe I've had about Mega Man 2, namely the unbalanced weapon energy consumption. No more farming for refills!

Also the added weapon functionality is a welcome improvement, especially the remote Crash Bombs. I no longer dread The Wily 4 gun wall boss.

Tighter controls also a plus, not slipping off the edge of narrow platforms.

Excellent work on this, I am very grateful!

Some suggestions for future updates:

  • Glitch fix for falling off of ladders after unpausing.
  • Weapon switch using Select button.

Removed what made MM2 special and unique.8.bit.fan2017-03-23Version 1.3

This is going to be a quick review as it's an Improvement hack so I'll keep it brief.

While the hacker's intentions are there and all those who love MM2(including myself) wants to find even more ways to improve upon this almost flawless classic, sometimes changing too much of its core and what made MM2 great is not the best idea.

First thing first, I HATE the removal of Floor Friction. This is one of the things that made MM1 and MM2 unique and arguably better than 3-6. The momentum that MM has makes the first 2 MM games feel more natural and more like a genuine platformer. Whereas the removal of it makes MM feel 'stiff' and unnatural. This is the WORST part of this hack.

Other improvement aspects are good such as energy filling faster as they don't impact the quality of the game mechanics/gameplay.

Modifications to weapons were a hit and miss. Time Stopper could always be improved, as it does here. But adding more Crash Bombs breaks the game such as Wily 4 boss. You were meant to figure out how to maximize every single Crash Bombs to beat it.

Ok I guess this review turned out to be longer than I expected. But I want to stress the fact to NEVER remove the Floor Friction or change MM's physics/mechanics in MM1 and MM2. Otherwise you might as well do hacks for MM3-6. I absolutely despise this change and for this reason alone I would not recommend this or any other hacks that changes MM1&2's physics/mechanics.

Still Very UnbalancedRafaelele2016-06-19Version 1.3

Changes I recommend:

Metal Blade - 2 blades per weapon energy unit Reason: 4 per unit was way too generous. Have never been even been halfway empty.

Bubble Lead - 2 bubbles per unit Reason: 1 per unit is not enough. Never have enough to beat final boss on Difficult mode.

Leaf Shield - 4 units per use Reason: Added mobility made most stretches of the game a cakewalk.

Time Stopper - Find any way to gimp it Reason: This modified version is flat out broken.

Atomic Fire - 2 units per regular shot, 8 per charged shot Reason - Same as Metal Blade

Crash Bomb - 2 units per shot Reason - Same as Metal Blade

Air Shooter - 2 units per shot Reason - Barney don't shat yo fro on Macdonalds

Items 1, 2, & 3 - Make consumable again Reason - Unlimited item #2 breaks the game

God Mode doesn't even begin to describe this.Sonic109742016-01-01Version 1.3

Since the weapons Mega Man get after defeating Robot Masters are much better, this completely breaks the game. Here are the differences.

Metal Blades got a buff and are even more insanely powerful.

Air Shooter consumes less ammo.

Bubble Lead is unchanged. Ehhh...

Quick Boomerang got a buff like Metal Blades.

Crash Bomber consumes less ammo, and blows up on a second button press.

Time Stopper doesn't get consumed in one go. Similar to the Flash Stopper in Mega Man 4, it gets used a little bit, and then depletes ammo. So Quick Man can be taken down much quicker (heh).

Atomic Fire charges faster. Ehhh...

The Leaf Shield doesn't leave (heh) when you move. As a result, this makes the shield just as broken as the Metal Blades. It's awesome

The items have infinite ammo. Nice.

So by the time you get to Wily Fortress, you are so pimped out in awesome gadgets, the fortress is a walk in the park. This is very awesome and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a fun time.

Maybe makes things easier, but thats not always badeternalsage2014-11-14-

This mod/hack puts a nice twist to the old Mega Man 2 (aka one of the best games ever made) in that it changes how some of the weapons work. The walking leaf shield and the timed crash bombs are both cool tweaks that I must say fulfill certain wishes I had from my early days when this game was new. Having played this mod, however, I can see why these things were not the standard way of things. It definately makes the game easier. That being said, this is a tough game, and this is by far a better "easy mode" than many I've seen that make your health higher or whatever, and made for a fun playthrough. I definately used leaf shield and crash bombs (and atomic fire for that matter) more than I ever did before, so it was nice not to be "all metal blades all the time" for once. Overall, a very nice addition that even a "hardcore" player can have fun with just for a look at how something could have been.

Oh, and this hack is also compatible with the "Mystery of Dr. Willy" hack by RetroRain. Just apply this one first, then Mystery of Dr. Willy. :D
