A Beautiful NightmareMother Kojiro2017-12-26Version 1.0

This hack changes the skies all to black, and the landscape mostly to red and white. You won't see a lot of visual variety here, but the landscape that was created is quite beautiful, especially with the little splashes of color provided by the enemies. All of the level layouts are exactly the same, and yet, it does still feel like a new world. There are some great little moments, too, like the whales that are mostly invisible against the black sky, making them seem like some terrifying shadow creatures, with only an eye visible in the darkness. I also really liked the purple shadow monsters in World 7. If I have any gripe with it, it's that the final boss music plays throughout almost the entire game; the only exceptions are the short fanfares, a select few caves, and the ending. Now, if there's going to be one song to make this feel like a nightmare, this is a good choice, and it's a good song, too. I get that you can't have the happy little ragtime music in a nightmare. I do feel, though, that this hack would've benefited from some new music. Still a great experience for someone looking for a dark aesthetic.
