| Not Good For Casual Players | cavatica | 2023-03-09 | Version 1.1.5 |
I had heard this hack was a good way to experience Super Metroid for the first time. I think people who say that forget that Super Metroid itself is a fairly difficult game for newer players, and this hack amps up that difficulty to a point of pure frustration. Taking away all quick kill options for Draygon while also forcing you to fight her in quicksand isn't fun, and neither is needing to navigate a maze of hidden paths during the escape sequence with an unforgiving timer. Beyond that, the art is nice, and there are sections that give genuinely clever twists on the formula. If you're a more experienced Super Metroid player, this could be a neat way to experience it in a de-familiarized way, but even then, it feels like a lot of the difficulty is built off of removing options rather than adding something interesting.
| Almost like a remaster, but held back by ancient controls | vree | 2021-10-21 | Version 1.1.5 |
Amazing looking visual update and adds a few extra paths and the like without straying too much from the vanilla experience. This feels like a remaster of the original like Zero Mission and AM2R were for their respective game. In short this would be the go to vanilla feeling Super Metroid romhack if it wasn't for the controls. I guess in that regard Super Metroid "Redux" rom hack spoiled many people. Only the addition of the following 2 control options would make a world of difference:
It would be great to see similar updated controls/mechanics in this rom hack in the future. Anyway I can still perfectly advise this rom hack to most people that want a vanilla experience and don't mind the outdated controls. Amazing job!
| Awesome | eskimo44 | 2020-08-10 | Version 1.1.5 |
Great re-imagining of Super Metroid. Looks great, is a lot more open for better or worse, and is very fast. It's different enough to require a careful eye to find all the secrets so despite feeling very familiar in terms of layout it still manages to be fresh. I think the fact it's still largely a vanilla layout means it's not as great IMO as Hyper Metroid, Super Zero Mission, or Ascent but it's absolutely top tier non the less.
| A Great hack for the nostalgia | icetwister1999 | 2020-08-10 | Version 1.1.5 |
I wanted a normal difficultly hack that was similar too to original so this is my favorite rom hack. Not only did it slightly mix up the placement on the map, but the added art if fantastic. I will likely not play project base after playing this one, as I'm not into speed runs at the moment. The few secret item locations and hard to reach items shown on map was very fun getting in a casual play-though. The Creteria boss felt like the final boss too me as mother brain was never a boss battle so I stopped playing before mother brain. You couldn't zap your self and the boss like in vanilla so I had fun learning how to beat it. Beating the fish boss felt so awesome I just wanted to end on a good note. I went to the heat damage area too soon and saved but with this mod I was able to get back with out being softlocked, unlike vanilla and other hacks like super zero mission. A+
| one of the best | klaus | 2020-06-16 | Version 1.1.5 |
this is very high in my list, among the very best full hacks i've seen so far.. i don't understand why there's so few reviews about it. the artwork is simply outstanding. it captures the real spirit of the original game, being based on exploration and atmosphere. the added rooms, puzzles, music, gfx, it is all amazing. a general overhaul feeling like a complete new super metroid game with high focus on moody ambiance, loneliness, desolated, ruined places falling appart by ravages of time and being abandoned. yes. it is _that_ good. i cannot wait to see more content from the author. many thanks for your work. i love it. period.
| A great hack, but... | metatron724 | 2020-01-26 | Version 1.1.0 |
It is a great hack, only one negative detail, the initial screen with Samus blinking only one eye, it's weird. You should fix that.
| Just play Project Base instead... | Shade.Usher | 2018-08-04 | Version 1.1.0 |
This game is kind of like Project Base, but worse. Project Base opened the game up massively, but this just shuts it right down. I've never seen a hack railroad you so hard to Spore Spawn. In general, the game is constantly trying to shut down sequence breaks; the Red Tower is now full of spikes, so you have to use infinite bomb jumps to get up it early. Speed blocks are everywhere for whatever reason. In general, so much about this is "Project Base but worse". It does a few things that are cute once, such as making you take a weird path after Spore Spawn to get to the Red Tower, but this is only neat the first time you see it. X-Ray is gone, to make finding things more annoying and tedious. Bosses often have annoyances added to try and make them harder; Spore Spawn being underwater is pure nonsense on every level, and it only serves to make an already tedious fight more tedious. One room has electrified water, which basically makes the water slowly hurt you but also knock you back; as a result, it's, as far as I could tell, impossible to get out of the water, you're just stuck there until you die. There are 60 damage spikes everywhere, including really early on when you only have 100 or 200 health. Why is the tube Maridia door permanently locked? Why is it locked at all? The only things I really liked were the absurd distance you get off of diagonal bomb jumps and the baby metroid thing that broke some blocks. I also like some minor aesthetic things, but they don't even begin to make up for the issues added. A lot of the issues might be acceptable if it wasn't so similar to the base game / Project Base; as is, I have no reason to ever play it again when I know Project Base is much better.
| This is good but it needs critical work | MagickMel | 2018-06-10 | Version 1.1.0 |
Visually this hack looks incredible and I am going to be finishing this as soon as I can but there are a couple of issues that need to be fixed or tweaked. The first and most jarring is the intro sequence with Samus' left eye. It is completely stationary and does not animate like the eye on the right. It looks incredibly bad and should probably be removed entirely. The other thing I would recommend tweaking is the intro's narrative as well as having the ability to speed up the text, similar to Hyper Metroid's way to do this. For the narrative, I think it would be best to steer away from the old Super Metroid intro entirely and write something yourself to help set your hack apart from the events that occurred during Super Metroid for your fan-canon. Aside from this immediate issues, I love the fact that this jumps straight into Zebes instead of going to the space colony ship like every other hack. This is refreshing. I also love the sprite work and the overall feel of this game so far.
| just a little more workout | TheShepherd | 2018-06-10 | Version 1.1.0 |
It looks awesome, to me even little better than Hyper Metroid. Like the reviewer before me, I've to say just stay away from the original as far as you can. Own story own everything. To me the best Metroid hacks til now were the ones which feel like it is a different game but the the same mechanics. Take that hack offline and take your time to finish, sure you will be able to do the best Metroid hack ever. For now, great hack and fun to play :)
