Hack description

This hack updates Phantasy Star 2's camera whenever the player moves, instead of when the player reaches an arbitrary distance from the edge of the screen.

Currently, the camera does not correct itself if the player reaches the visible edge of a map and moves back towards the center of the map. The frequent random encounters and map transitions will recenter the camera.

This hack is no longer publicly available.

A slight problemEvilJagaGenius2018-12-23Version 0.1

I try playing RPGs in Spanish from time to time to learn the language, and had tried Phantasy Star 2 before (having loved the first Phantasy Star). The camera was one of my frustrations with the game, so I was curious to try this and see if it made navigating the labyrinths any easier. I used the [T+Spa] ROM from the GoodGen set that I had already modified with the Easy Mode patch. When I fired up the freshly patched game, I could enjoy Phantasy Star 2 with the camera fixed!.. in English.

For some reason whenever I use this patch on my translated ROM it resets the script back to the original English, and it also undoes the Easy Mode patch as well. Further investigation reveals that it does this for every translation in the GoodGen set (I tested German, French, Chinese, and Russian) except, strangely, for the Russian one. I see Russian characters on the screen but I don't know if they mean anything, seeing as though I don't know Russian.

Unfortunately I can't reapply my Spanish translation (extracted from the [T+Spa] ROM) without breaking it. I can apply the Easy Mode patch again though, which results in absolutely ludicrous buckets of EXP and meseta - triple digits for each on the first random encounter.

So, unfortunately, I can't recommend this patch yet until it plays nice with other patches and translations. However, if you're looking for vanilla English Phantasy Star with a fixed camera, the patch performs as advertised.
