Hack description

A hack that eases the entry level curve for new players, as well as some changes that even veteran players can enjoy.

- Text is a lot faster.
- Camera has been fixed, now more centered.
- Pressing the select button toggles between Hyper and Jump shoes if you have any of those.
- Start button goes to the map screen. Pausing has been removed.
- Better password screen with more information on controls and also way more intuitive controls (see screenshot).
- New map screen showing the location of some important items. The player is still left wondering what those are and how exactly to get there anyway, so it actually works like a loose guide. It could seem like it makes it too easy, but in the end that is definitely not the case.
- The "start/continue" screen has been redone with quick guide and plot setting.
- Cannot move the hand or the hammer when hitting in rooms. Just use the item and if there's something to appear, it will.
- Rearranged the health on the HUD.
- Only need to hit the lady once instead of five times.
- Better controls inside rooms. Should be a lot more natural: A confirms, B cancels, Select changes the item list, D-pad moves the cursor as expected (all directions work)

This hack takes a lot of the tedium out of playing the game. The quality of life improvements make the game much more enjoyable. The Goonies was a fun game to begin with, but this makes it so much better. Thanks for this hack!

This solved 99% of the problems I had with a nostalgic game from my childhood. Recommended highly for anyone wanting to go back and play this. Small word of warning: I was unable to leave the second to last room (Big giant locked door) when I accidentally wandered that way before having all the goonies. A bug related to one of the menu or tool changes maybe. As near as I can tell the mod otherwise works perfectly, so just don't go there before you're ready to win.

A lot of the games from my childhood were fun but needlessly difficult or strange controls. This is one that is fun to play through but hunting for items is a chore. This hack marks the items on the map, not saying what they are, so not as much hunting. The game is still enjoyable to play but this makes it much more so.

I'm super impressed with all the quality of life improvements nesrocks got working in this old gem. My only real complaint is that it's not compatible with the SRAM saving edition. I still recommend this hack because it's such great work, it's just a shame I have to choose between them. I really hope nesrocks is able to get the two hacks working together for the ultimate version of this game.
