Hack description

Update and improvement of the FlashPV hack https://retrohackers.net/hack-details.php?id=3789/, which in turn incorporated the kuja killer hack https://retrohackers.net/hack-details.php?id=992/.

And what it does:

-Updates the FlashPV hack to version 2.22 by Kuja Killer.

-Redo the word 'Mega' from the title to conform to the other games in the series.

-It is offered in two versions, with or without subtitles.

-Returns the energy bar to its original position as in the other games, thanks to the G30FF tip.

Thanks immensely to RealGaea who practically updated the original hack, my role was only to have the idea of the update and then put some finishing touches on. Unfortunately the normal game version is not yet ready, watch for future updates.

A hex editor, Tile Layer Pro, PPU viewer from Mesen and Lunar IPS were used.

Reviews

Broken and falsely advertisedViperAcidZX2022-01-11Version 2.22

I wanted to try this ROM hack since I wanted to have a "no subtitle" version of the Japanese-styled logo set of the first six NES Mega Man games, but sadly this ROM hack is not only broken (e.g. Gemini Laser not working as other reviewers pointed out) and brick certain Mega Man 3 ROMs with different checksums, it also doesn't seem to do anything that it is advertised since I noticed the boss life meter isn't on the right side of the screen among other things that original ROM hack by kuja killer or FlashPV's variant of it actually accomplished. Either fix this broken ROM hack or let kuja killer or FlashPV make a proper "no subtitle" Japanese-styled logo variant instead of wasting everyone's time with a broken and useless ROM hack.

Bug that makes the hack unusableHaniel2021-01-02Version 2.22

This is an excellent addendum to the KK hack. However, there is a bug that prevents the hack from being useful.

The Gemini Laser doesn't function. The sound is made when firing but the laser has disappeared. I tested the original Improvement Hack by itself and it works fine, but the Screen Update v2.22 makes the laser disappear.

I used the recent version of MESEN and tested other hacks and all of them work fine.

Once this bug is fixed, I can recommend. The title screen looks great though.

Major bugs, non-improvements intact.Mr. Pennington2020-12-23Version 2.22

I think the Kuja hack seriously needs to be dropped as the new baseline for Mega Man/Rockman 3 improvement patches. It stepped well outside the realm of "improvement" and has seemingly only complicated subsequent hacks. This one, if I'm understanding, incorporates an OUTDATED Kuja version. If you (like me) never encountered the "blinking enemies" issue before, you will here. I turned it off once I reached Needle Man and the Gemini Laser shot blanks.

I was glad to see the boss energy bars returned to the correct side of the screen and the tadpole eggs reverted to their original, stationary sprite, but the rest of the Kuja version's artistic liberties remain intact. The description for this hack states that the boss energy bars were returned to the left side of the screen to maintain continuity with the other NES entries. Why, then, does Mega Man remain in place after unpausing, which he cannot in Mega Man 4? Why doesn't gameplay pause during health/weapon refills, like EVERY ITERATION of Mega Man? Why do I have the ability to toggle weapons and exit stages? What earthly reason would one HAVE to exit or revisit any stage in Mega Man 3? Proto Man still nonsensically dons the Break Man mask in plain sight. Ect., etc., etc.

I hope someone eventually just starts from the ground up with Mega Man/Rockman 3 improvement patches. It seems fairly obvious to me what the game would've most likely been if production hadn't been rushed. Hopefully, a hack will eventually just DO THAT. With all that said, even if you welcome the artistic liberties, the hack's broken.

This is Completely Awesome!SkyLizardGirl2020-12-21Version 2.22

This is Completely Awesome.

  • You get the entire custom cutscenes with story just like with all the other Mega-man games now.

Although the Subtitle at the bottom is not really needed.

I just wanted all my Mega-man Roms to act the same way in the intro and this totally fixes that now. Thanks for this awesome update.'

Now i am just wondering, if this was done with the Mega-Man 1 Rom??

I will have to check if they did this for that game yet.
