Hack description

Merciless Edition II is a modification of the reverse engineered Doom 64 source code, with the goal of adding new features and accessibility options. The primary focus on compatibility is Nintendo 64 hardware, but it works on emulators too. Some of the features include texture filtering modes, extended brightness, dithering, colored HUD, automap stats, optimizations, bug fixes, and more! On top of that it has a "Be Merciless" difficulty mode which makes the monsters more aggressive and unpredictable, but gives the players a boost in terms of ammo and weapon switching. Intended for an overall more violent experience for those who dare.

List of Features:

- New "Be Merciless!" difficulty makes the enemies more relentless, unpredictable, and agile. The player gets some boosts too!
- Menus have been reorganized for easier access, new defaults, and to accommodate the new extra features.
- New autorun and motion bob options. Motion bob can be disabled to reduce motion sickness and autorun helps with movement speed.
- Video menu now allows texture filtering, dithering, and interlacing to be turned on or off. Also the game's brightness is extended.
- Display menu can turn off flashes and strobe effects, intermission texts, or new map statistics in the automap.
- New options for a HUD colors, transparency, and margins.
- There is a new "Retro Fighters" controller option and weapon switching has been adjusted.
- Story screens have been updated with a new introduction, ways to speed them up, and grammar corrections.
- Messaging system now supports colors and more lines. It is easier to notice secrets and new death texts from the community appear!
- Game saves now display the difficulty level of the save. Also the difficulty can be changed when restarting a level.
- Missing zombiemen sounds have been restored as well as a some missing texts.
- Features menu contains more options added from Doom 64 RE and a few new bonus ones as well.
- Code has been updated with a higher compiling optimization and updated rendering microcode.
- The new options are tested to work on N64 hardware, however emulators do not have support of all of the N64 features.
- The github page further describes other changes as updates.

Doom 64 Merciless Edition was the definitive way to play until...Adam Catalyst2021-05-27Version 1.0

The merciless edition released a few months ago was by far and away the definitive way to play Doom 64 on the N64. But now this second merciless edition blows the previous one away. Even more options and controls I didn't know I ever wanted, but now I can't live without. More refined menu. Beautiful tweaks. The only thing I could possibly ask for, is the ability to save settings. Regardless I give this my highest recommendation.

Doom 64 but even better!BulkSlash2021-05-12Version 1.0

If you've played Doom 64 you probably know it's awesome and a really underrated gem, this patch just helps to make the game even more awesome. The extra brightness levels in this patch are very nice and even better you can now save before playing the hidden level Hectic, which I really need as I usually die dozens of times trying to beat it!

There's lots of other nice little tweaks like coloured text on the status bar, better weapon switching, map stats, etc, all of which help to make this the ultimate version of Doom. There are lots of graphic tweak options too but I'm quite happy with the default look of the game, but if you do want Doom 64 to look more like the original Doom games without any filtering you can do that.

If there's one thing I'd hope could be added in future is for the game to save your settings. Currently Doom 64 loses any custom control mappings as well as brightness settings, etc when you power off. It's not a major issue to set them again when you play but it would be cool if they could be saved somehow.

I definitely recommend you rip and tear on your N64 with this patch!
