Hack description

This is a patch of Mega Man that gets rid of the score system to make it more in-line with future entries.

Changes:
-Score balls aren't dropped from enemies.
-The score is not displayed on the top of the screen.
-Clear points aren't added up nor displayed when selecting a boss.
-The number of score balls collected isn't counted after defeating a boss; you go straight to the select screen.

An additional patch is included which also disables the select button, which in turn fixes the bug that allows players to get a lot of hits on bosses from one shot.

Huge thank you goes to bisqwit for his Mega Man 1 disassembly.

Reviews

Somewhat works as intended, but there's problemsCompassman2022-01-10Version 1.0

The hack works as intended for the most part, skipping having to wait for the score to tally at the end of the stage feels very good and all, but there were issues I ran into the moment I started trying to play the game.

For starters, of all the emulators I've tried so far, it only works on FCEUX. High/Cycle-accurate emulators like PuNES and Mesen/Mesen-X will reset during the stage start sequence, and this behavior I can confirm occurs on real hardware too (via EverDrive-N8 Pro). The score is also printed on the Game Over screen, which suggests that score wasn't technically removed from the game engine, only masked. There's another bug that occurs during the ending after Dr. Wily is defeated, there's bugged tiles assigned to the health bar which lets it display during the whole credits sequence.

If this hack works for you on FCEUX, that's fine. But I can't recommend the hack due to the issues mentioned above.
