Hack description

VRC6 music remix by RushJet1.

Works on most emulators (Mesen, FCEUX, Mednafen, Bizhawk, PuNes, Nestopia, Ares, e.t.c).

Please note:

This patch does not currently work on the Everdrive N8 OS v1.26 due to non-standard configuration(chr-ram for mapper26) and might not work on some emulators for the same reason.

v1.1 - lowered volume of vrc6 pulse channels and some sfx-related fixes.

v1.2 - added 'wily4-gauntlet' and 'last stand' songs, some other reworks.

Excellent update and overall awesome.KevvyLava2023-08-21Version 1.2

The updated version turns the experience into the best possible classic Mega Man experience. The music from RushJet1 is excellent and hearing the "Enker" theme in Wily4 is fun. But the best part is the effective use of the boss gauntlet music just for that part. And I like that the boss gauntlet music continues all the way to the final Wily room and if you die on Wily and return to the final checkpoint, it is back to Enker. Not sure if intentional, but I thought it felt correct. Would recommend to anyone. If we can get this working on an Everdrive as well, or God forbid on a real cart, I'd be jazzed.

A flaw I can't unhear....RagingRowen2023-06-27Version 1.0

And that flaw is the Mega Buster shoot sound also gets a notable low-pitch buzz at the end of it.

Still, it's a great start and I hope this leads to a future where we'll get hacks for the rest of RJ1's work.

A minor change I would also consider is lowering the volume of the VRC6 samples a little, since they currently drown out the rest of the tunes a fair bit, at least compared to how it sounds on the guy's Bandcamp.

Mega Man Meets VRC6lowchaomain2023-06-26Version 1.0

There don't seem to be many NES hacks that use the expanded sound capabilities of the different mapper chips found in some games, but this is a great example of one that does. Up until recently, I thought it was nearly impossible to port a game that uses an older, simpler mapper to a newer, more complex one such as the VRC6, but I'm very happy to be proven wrong.

This is a great way to re-experience Mega Man 1, while also showcasing the potential for future hacks to sport similarly complex audio. RushJet1 is among one of the many talented Famitracker composers that frequently use the additional channels provided by chips such as the aforementioned VRC6, the VRC7, Sunsoft 5B, Namco 163 and others. You can find this Mega Man 1 soundtrack as well as many other NES covers that use these on YouTube. The possibilities for expansion audio to appear in other games is truly exciting. Recommended without reservation!

Unbearable noise! Omg! No!Insane Mame Gamer (IMG)2023-06-25Version 1.0

I tried this out just now and immediately observed just how terrible the new music sounds in comparison to the old music within the original game. I instantly missed the original music and after just a few dreadful minutes of suffering and plugging my ears I turned it off. That's how bad this cacophony is. In my opinion this patch does not serve the original any justice and sounds like a bunch of clamour that's not at all suitable for Mega Man the original NES game, but perhaps is maybe suitable for some kind of fast paced remix hack. But that's a big maybe. I absolutely do not and will not recommend this hack!

This is really quite excellentSpooniest2023-06-25Version 1.0

I really can't recommend this enough. The improvement in sound quality is just phenomenal, and it changes the way the game feels...for the better.

Megaman 1 had big ambitions, but it ran up against a lot of constraints that kept it from becoming one of those "next big thing" titles. Megaman 2 is far more known for that.

And while the compositions from MM1 are all great, there are some...shall we say interesting choices in the vanilla version, when it comes to tone and flavor. This modification gives every song a nice, full sound, with extended arrangements that all seem done by a professional composer. The extensions to the songs that are there fit like a glove. At no point did I feel bounced out of the action by a strange note choice or a particular change of beat or tempo.

I would say that the sawtooth wave was used a bit more often than I might care for personally (if that's what it is...that constantly-modulating-at-high-speed background instrument), and also that Iceman's music was sped up considerably. It kind of fits, since if I was in the arctic, I'd be like "let's get out of here as fast as possible," but it was a noticeable change from the vanilla, which is more mid-tempo.

Other than those two things, I really don't have any other qualms. It's quite good.
