Hack description

VRC6 music remix by RushJet1.

Works only on: FCEUX, Mednafen, Bizhawk, PuNes, Ares.

Doesn't work on: Mesen, Nestopia and most other emulators.

Please note:

This patch does not currently work on the Everdrive N8 OS v1.26 due to non-standard configuration (chr-ram and 512KB for mapper26).

Confirmed that it does work on Everdrive N8 Pro, PowerPak and InviteNes.

update 1.2:
- samples changed to PCM.
- added VRC6 volume control.
- fixed ending credits song playing intro twice.
- some other fixes added along with the readme file.

One word: Yes.MrTrippleAAA2024-04-15Version 1.0-1.2

I have been wanting an actual patch for this for years now. I love RushJet1's remixes and MM2 Remade is my absolute favorite among all of them. It's so great to hear this finally playing on the actual game, and on legitimate hardware as well. While I can't confirm that this works on the Everdrive, I CAN confirm that this works on the PowerPak with a way to play VRC6 music. I personally have an actual Famicom with a modified converter that plays NES carts and VRC6 music. It works perfectly. However, I do have a few issues that I'd like to see patched in a future update if it were to ever happen:

  • The only bug that I encountered in the entire hack is an odd buzzing sound that occurs after the boss gate closes before the boss actually appears. I've tested this on both real hardware and on emulator (FCEUX) and it does this on both ends. Otherwise, it works pretty nice.
  • So a few issues I have with the music placements: Firstly, why doesn't Wily 5's track continue to play around the bosses? The track was remixed to work with that, so having the boss music play instead just feels interrupting. That's a track you want to hear throughout the level, fighting all of the Robot Masters. The actual Cover Playthrough stops the music at the Wily Machine though, but there it just uses the Normal Wily Boss theme. Why is the Alien track here instead whereas the actual Alien fight uses the opposite track? It's a nitpick, but I prefer to have the consistency.
  • Wily 6 doesn't grow louder within each section, instead playing only once with each volume. Though, that could be a limitation issue. Maybe just have the loudest volume in the track loop instead?
  • The credits theme plays the title theme twice, so I assume that just means the title theme and the second half of the credits theme are meant to be separate in the game's programming. I think an easy fix would be to go into Famitracker, load up the MM2 Remade ftm module, and remove the first half of the track.

Otherwise, this is excellent. If you're stuck at all on what I'm talking about here, then I'd just recommend watching RushJet1's actual cover playthrough on his YouTube Channel. It shows just what he had in mind when composing these tracks. Granted, there are some things that I don't expect to work because of limitations, like Wily 6 and Wily 3 starting just before the level starts... But regardless, fantastic work on this hack and I hope to see one with MM3 in the future. :)

EDIT, 1.1: Definite improvement over the last version. Only thing that needs fixing now is the credits theme. Also, a nitpick, but I noticed that the boss theme plays immediately during the transition of entering the boss room in the main stages without any silence beforehand like in the original. What happened to that? Was it removed with the transition to VRC6? I don't mind it as much, though I would prefer to see it added back. Otherwise, this is great.

EDIT, 1.2: Awesome. If I could request just one more thing, is it possible you could make the PCM samples a seperate patch? It's a personal nitpick, and while they are nice, I myself am a bit more partial to the old percussion from the original versions. Otherwise, this is fantastic. Keep up the good work, and I hope to see patches for the rest of the games. :D

(N8 Pro Issues) The Best Covers Finally Added After 10 Years!jlunaars2024-03-01Version 1.1

Rushjet1's VRC6 covers have graced my ears on repeat for over 10 years, so I'm very happy to finally play the original games with his reimagined tracks. If you're a fan of the original soundtrack, his adaptations with the extra audio channels are a MUST-listen.

At the time of this writing (despite other reviews claiming the contrary), this hack does not function properly with an Everdrive N8 Pro cartridge. While the game runs just fine, there are audio channels missing during gameplay - thus rendering the entire hack useless, imo.

I have tested other games (NES, FDS and even other hacks that use VRC6) and other TVs (CRTs and modern), but this hack has the same problem across the board. Oddly enough, using the ROM listed (no-intro) breaks the hack entirely. I used a ROM from another database to even get it to play. My email/DMs are open to suggestions and I can provide recordings.

I'm experiencing this issue with the MM1 hack as well.

All that being said, hey if you're just using emulators, check the description - it runs brilliantly with FCEUX.

Side note: It simply does not boot on the Analogue Pocket (tested with agg23 and Spiritualized cores).

OS Versions: Everdrive N8 Pro: ver 2.15 Analogue Pocket: ver 2.1

I really hope these hacks continue to be made. Rushjet1's work deserves all the attention and can rejuvenate any replay of these classic games. Go check out his work on youtube.

MM3 and MM4 remain!

Works on real HW (N8 PRO)Sonick452023-08-27Version 1.0

Description reports this patch doesn't work on real hardware with an Everdrive N8, but it DOES work with an Everdrive N8 PRO ! (tested on current OS 2.14) Great improvement over the original game: better quality music but retaining the global 8-bit feel of the music.

Excellent musicKevvyLava2023-07-25Version 1.0

This is excellent! I've hoped for this for a very long time. I'm sure there are specific reasons it doesn't work with some emulators, but being able to play it in any emulator with this excellent soundtrack is a treat. If I could somehow get my Rockman FC carts repro'd with this music on them, I don't even know what I'd do with myself. A nice touch in this hack is the extra music that RushJet1 added. For example, in the original, the music for Wily 1&2 are the same, but in this one, the Wily levels (and Wily boss) all have different music. Excellent work.
