Hack description

Castlevania Remix is a hack of Castlevania which incorporates the use of a few simple tones for the palette in order to create a bit of a sepia/black-and-white quality to the game, which lends itself very well to Castlevania, making it look more like a silver-age era monster film, which is definitely where the idea for Castlevania originated. Some might scoff at the use of a palette like this, but making the graphics look this detailed on the NES with a small set of colors is no small feat.

Besides the graphical changes, the level layouts are also changed, and in some spots it's a lot more difficult, and in others it's easier. One thing to watch out for, though, is a distinct lack of hearts, which makes bosses a lot harder to defeat since you will only get off a few shots with your weapons before having to resort to your whip. Oh, and also be on the look-out for camouflaged staircases in a few spots-- if you can't find them, you may find yourself stuck.

Also of interest is that the soundtrack has been rearranged slightly, and in some spots modified--but the sound hacks still need a little work. Perhaps in a future version.

Why? Just, why?brgr2642019-05-25Version 1.0

This is a question I continuously asked myself through out what I played of this game. For starters, there were some very poor graphical choices made in the development of this hack. The title screen looks pretty good, but it's all down hill from here. The level design feels lazy and uninspired. It also feels as if the creator gave up half way through the second level. There are entire sections you can easily skip. To pour salt on an open wound, all the candles are invisible, and when I do accidently hit one, nothing comes out most of the time. I just blindly whip the air praying something comes out of it. And for whatever reason, the developer decided to change the music. Now, there's no problem with changing the order of the level themes, the problem comes in when you start to change them yourself. These changes don't do anything to enhance the music. In my opinion, the tracks should've been left how they were. I just gave up after the first section of the third level, because I felt playing the rest of the game wasn't worth it. Now, I've only played the first two levels and a part of the third level, and for all I know, the last four levels are some of the best Castlevania levels to exist, but I wouldn't personally recommend this game. All these choices made in this hack are rather questionable to me. I guess if your into the graphic style give it a go, but this isn't a hack I see myself returning to any time soon.

Could be betteronepiecefan20072018-08-16Version 1.0

This hack could be interesting but it has too many problems! One among all is that the only two colors used that are black and sepia, this two colors, besides making the level design non-existent because all the levels are identical, force you to spend a lot of time jumping like a rabbit to find some candles and this is annoying. Another level design problem is represented by the enemies, in fact, despite the 99% of enemies are colored sepia to make contrast with the black background, for some unknown motivations the bats are all colored black and you can't see them (except when they hit you and make you fall into a hole). Remaining in the field of enemies there is a problem with the 4° boss, when the fight starts the monster above Frankenstein kill himself by jumping into a hole... No comment. And now the problem above all, one problem to rule them all. In the final fight when Dracula reaches his 2nd form starts to climb the platforms (because in this level the floor isn't regular but goes up through platforms) when he reached the top you can let him fall into a hole on the left. Now start the fun fact, Dracula don't die but simply spawn on a casual point (on you) into the level. My vote for this hack is 2/5

Decent hack with some issuesbogaabogaa2017-07-30Version 1.0

The difficulty of the hack is not too high. There are parts that been easier then the original and some parts give you a good new challenge to overcome.

I like to hear some new tunes and you go with a canon like remix in your hack. There are some sounds mostly in the beginning of the stage music that could use some tuning. Sometimes less is better.

You love your black white theme and I know why you stick to it in almost all the levels. For me I liked your stage tow the best. I think you could had dedicated one color to every stage. It would had helped you to guide the player better. You know set a color for background mood or use it for solid blocks.

The level design is not too bad. Exploring is punishing since you will probably end up in a pit. Did not find much beside the intended path. The candles/secrets remain in the room as in the original but are invisible. It was interesting for me since I know the game a bit.. but for most player this will be just frustrating to find the stuff. If you want to make it more accessible for casual player redraw the candles with some with and gray.

I know people dislike your Frankenstein but I had to laugh so hard there ^^ The Bosses remain the same but the environment make some interesting again.

Thanks for the hack and your time.

Poor Palette ChoicesMegafield642015-06-02Version 1.0

The palette choices in this hack are horrendous. It's just too overwhelmed with dark colors in order to be able to see what is going on in the game. This makes the game virtually unplayable.
