Gyromite

Platform : Nintendo Entertainment System

Publisher : Nintendo

Release date : 13 August 1985

Category : Puzzle

Game description

Gyromite is a decent little puzzle game that has more historic value rather than gameplay value. Gamewise, the player controls Dr. Hector whose lab has been infested with dynamite. The goal is to deactivate all of the dynamite, the catch is that there are red and blue pillars blocking various corridors within the lab. This is where this game's main gimmick and true purpose came in. In order for a player to change the position of the pillars, he/she must have R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy) move gyros around. R.O.B. isn't an in game character, instead it's a peripheral that interacts with the game through screen flashes like the light gun. The purpose of this gimmick was in order to use R.O.B. as a Trojan Horse in order for Nintendo to convince the American toy stores to sell their product. This was because the Video Game Crash was still in the minds of the toy stores and at the time the owners though video games was a fad that had faded away. Once the toy stores realized that games like Super Mario Bros. were the real sellers of the NES, Nintendo officially dropped the robot accessory.
